Karbon and Canopy are both priced for firms that have outgrown spreadsheets and a shared drive, and both sit at the expensive end of accounting practice management. They earn that price in different ways. Karbon is built around a shared email inbox and team collaboration for mid-size firms. Canopy is a packaged platform with the strongest IRS tax-resolution tooling in the category and a fast-moving AI roadmap. Here’s how they compare, and where each one’s cost starts to bite.

Where Karbon Wins
Email management. Karbon’s Triage shared inbox is the best in the category. Email syncs in real time, gets linked to clients and work items, and can be assigned to teammates. Canopy links email to client records, but email is not the spine of the product the way it is in Karbon.
Team collaboration. @mentions, activity feeds and discussions on work items make Karbon strong for teams that talk about work in context. Karbon is used by 30,000+ accounting professionals across 34 countries and holds a 4.8/5 G2 rating.
Workflow depth. Work types, flexible templates and Tasklist Automators handle complex multi-step processes well. Canopy’s automated and recurring workflows are solid, but they only unlock on the Plus tier ($109/user/month).
Entry price on annual billing. Karbon Team at $59/user/month billed annually undercuts Canopy Standard at $74. The gap narrows once you add Karbon’s implementation fee and e-signature credits, and reverses if you need Karbon’s add-ons.
Where Canopy Wins
IRS tax resolution. Nothing else in the category comes close. With Form 2848 on file, Canopy pulls 20 years of IRS transcripts in one click, schedules automated transcript pulls, and updates its notice-response templates every year. The Tax Resolution and Transcripts & Notices add-ons cost $50/user/month each, but for a collections or notice-response practice that revenue justifies it. Karbon has no equivalent.
AI surface area. Canopy raised a $70M Series C in April 2025 and shipped Coworker (autonomous AI execution, in beta), Notetaker (AI meeting transcripts) and Smart Intake (AI-driven questionnaires and document requests) in 2026. Coworker, document renaming and Smart Intake are included in the tiers; Tax Workflow Automation, Close Automation and Tax Resolution are paid add-ons. Karbon AI is useful, but Canopy’s roadmap here is broader.
Document management. OCR, smart folders, detailed tagging and strong search make Canopy’s document module more feature-rich than most competitors, including Karbon.
E-signatures included. Canopy bundles e-signatures with its document management. Karbon charges per credit, from $100 for 100 credits up to $2,000 for 4,000.
Capacity forecasting. Canopy’s Premium tier includes capacity planning and forecasting alongside deeper reporting and advanced billing.

Choose Karbon If…
- Your firm has 10+ people and work runs through a shared team inbox
- You want best-in-class email triage tied to clients and work items
- You need advanced workflow templates and automators for complex, multi-step engagements
- You’re comfortable with a guided implementation and 40 to 60 hours of setup
- You don’t do IRS tax-resolution work
Choose Canopy If…
- Your firm does IRS tax resolution, transcripts or notice-response work
- You want the broadest AI tooling in the category (Coworker, Notetaker, Smart Intake)
- Document management depth (OCR, smart folders, search) matters to you
- You want e-signatures included rather than credit-metered
- You’re a medium or large firm that can absorb $74 to $149 per user plus add-ons
Or Consider Tidyflow
If Karbon is too email-centric and Canopy’s tiers and add-ons are more than your firm needs, Tidyflow is the third option for growing firms.
Tidyflow is $39/user/month ($29/user/month billed annually), billed monthly or annually with no user minimum and no implementation fee. It includes job management, a client portal, invoicing with Stripe payments, proposals and engagement letters, unlimited e-signatures, a shared inbox for Gmail, Microsoft 365 or IMAP, time tracking, and client requests with automated reminders. Ready-made tax organizers for Forms 1040, 1120-S, 1065, 1120 and 1041 are included, and document approvals can be locked to an invoice so the client cannot open, download, approve or sign until it is paid. Tidyflow Agent is included on every plan: an AI teammate you can assign a Job to or @mention in a comment, plus connectors so Claude, ChatGPT and other MCP tools can work inside your workspace. Tidyflow has no IRS tax-resolution module; if that is your core work, Canopy is the right call.
