Print or save PDFs to Tidyflow from any program

Send returns, organizers and other PDFs from tax software such as ProSeries, Lacerte, Drake, UltraTax CS or ProSystem fx, or any other program, straight into a client's folder with Print to Tidyflow in the desktop app.

Print to Tidyflow sends PDFs from your tax software, or any other program, into a client’s folder without downloading and uploading them. The Tidyflow desktop app watches a folder on your computer. Each new PDF saved there waits in To file until you choose its client and folder.

It works with any program that can save a PDF to a folder, including tax software such as ProSeries, Lacerte, Drake, UltraTax CS and ProSystem fx, and with any program you can print from, using Microsoft Print to PDF on Windows or Save as PDF on a Mac.

How Print to Tidyflow works

  1. You save or print a PDF into a watched folder.
  2. A few seconds after the file is finished, the desktop app shows a notification and lists the PDF under To file, with a client suggested from the file name.
  3. You click File, check the client and folder, optionally pick a Job, and confirm.
  4. The PDF uploads to the client’s folder. The original moves into a folder named Filed inside the watched folder, so it is never offered twice.

Print to Tidyflow uses an ordinary folder rather than a printer, so there is no printer driver to install and nothing changes how your PDFs look.

Watch a folder for Print to Tidyflow

  1. Open Settings in the desktop app by clicking your name at the bottom of the window.
  2. Under Watched folders, click Watch next to Tidyflow Print, or click Choose folder to pick any folder.

Tidyflow Print is a folder in your Documents folder for printing from any program. The app creates it when you watch it. If ProSeries is installed, the app also suggests its PDF folder for the latest tax year.

You can watch several folders. To stop, click Stop watching next to a folder. Only PDFs saved after you start watching a folder are offered, so files already in it are left alone.

Save PDFs from your tax software to Tidyflow

Most tax software can save returns, organizers and letters as PDFs to a folder. Either set that folder to the watched Tidyflow Print folder, or watch the folder your tax software already uses with Choose folder. Then save PDFs as usual, and each one appears in To file.

Some tax software starts a new PDF folder each tax year. When that happens, watch the new folder.

First, watch the Tidyflow Print folder in Settings.

On Windows:

  1. In any program, such as Word, Excel, a browser or your tax software, choose Print.
  2. Pick Microsoft Print to PDF as the printer and click Print.
  3. When Windows asks where to save, choose Documents, then Tidyflow Print, and click Save.

On a Mac:

  1. In any program, choose Print.
  2. Open the PDF menu at the bottom of the print window and choose Save as PDF.
  3. Choose Documents, then Tidyflow Print, and click Save.

If your tax software saves PDFs to its own folder, watch that folder instead with Choose folder.

File a PDF to a client from To file

  1. Click To file at the top of the desktop app. Each PDF shows its name, when it was saved and its Suggested Client.
  2. Click File next to the PDF.
  3. Check the Client. Click Change to pick a different one.
  4. Choose the Folder. Leave it on Files to add the PDF at the top of the client’s Files tab, outside any folder.
  5. Optionally choose one of the client’s open Jobs under Job, so the document also shows on that Job. Leave No Job to skip this.
  6. Click File to followed by the folder name, such as File to 2025 Tax.

The PDF shows in the client’s folder while it uploads, and uploads keep going if you close the window.

To look at a PDF first, click Open. To skip a PDF you do not want in Tidyflow, click Dismiss. A dismissed PDF stays in the watched folder and is offered again only if it is saved again.

Where filed PDFs go on your computer

After a PDF uploads, the desktop app moves the original into a folder named Filed inside the watched folder. If a file with the same name is already there, the app adds a number, such as Return (2).pdf. The app never deletes your PDFs. Files in Filed, or in any other subfolder, are not watched.
