Client Portal & Requests

Add a custom domain to the client portal

Serve your client portal from your own subdomain, such as portal.yourfirm.com, by adding a CNAME record at your domain provider.

A custom domain lets clients reach your client portal at your own subdomain, such as portal.yourfirm.com, instead of your Tidyflow portal address.

Custom domains are part of the Pro plan; see pricing. You must be a workspace Owner or Admin, and you need access to your domain’s DNS settings. Each firm can have one custom domain.

Add a custom domain to the client portal

  1. In the firm app, open Settings → Client portal and find Custom domain.
  2. Under Domain, enter the subdomain you want to use, such as portal.yourfirm.com.
  3. Click Add domain. Tidyflow shows the DNS record to create.
  4. Add the CNAME record at your domain provider.

Clients keep using your Tidyflow portal address until the custom domain shows Live.

To change to a different domain, remove the current one first, then add the new one.

Add the CNAME record at your domain provider

Your custom domain needs one CNAME record, created wherever your domain’s DNS is managed. That is often your domain registrar or website host.

  1. Open the DNS settings for your domain and create a new record.
  2. Set the type to CNAME.
  3. Copy Name and Target from Settings → Client portal into the record. For portal.yourfirm.com, the name is portal.
  4. Save the record.

Some DNS providers ask for the full name, portal.yourfirm.com, instead of portal.

The custom domain can take up to an hour to go live. Tidyflow checks the record automatically and updates the status, or you can click Check now.

Set the CNAME record to DNS only on Cloudflare

If your domain’s DNS is on Cloudflare, set the proxy status of the CNAME record to DNS only. Cloudflare recommends this for records that point to a service such as Tidyflow.

What the custom domain statuses mean

The status appears beside your domain in Settings → Client portal.

StatusWhat it meansWhat to do
Waiting for DNSTidyflow has not seen the CNAME record yet.Add the record, or check that it matches the values shown.
Issuing certificateThe record was found and the security certificate is being issued.Nothing. This finishes on its own.
LiveClients can use the portal on your custom domain.Nothing.
Needs attentionSetup failed, or a live domain’s record no longer points to Tidyflow.Follow the message shown, then click Check now.

While a custom domain shows Needs attention, clients use your Tidyflow portal address. If the status does not clear after you correct the record, remove the domain and add it again.

Can I use a root domain for the client portal?

No. A custom domain must be a subdomain, such as portal.yourfirm.com, not a root domain such as yourfirm.com. A CNAME record cannot be placed on a root domain, so Tidyflow does not accept one.

What changes for clients when the custom domain goes live

Once your custom domain is Live:

  • New portal links and portal emails use the custom domain.
  • Your Tidyflow portal address redirects to the custom domain, so existing links and website buttons keep working.
  • Clients sign in with the same details as before.

Remove a custom domain from the client portal

  1. Open Settings → Client portal and find Custom domain.
  2. Click Remove, then Remove domain to confirm.
  3. Delete the CNAME record at your domain provider.

Clients go back to your Tidyflow portal address. Links already sent to the custom domain stop working, so update any that point to it, such as a button on your website.

If your firm moves off the Pro plan, a live custom domain keeps working and you can still remove it, but you cannot add a new one.
